Access: Vigur is an eider colony protected by Icelandic laws that prohibit coming ashore at certain times of year. Overnight mooring, anchorage or coming ashore anywhere around the coast of Vigur, apart from at the landing site in front of the houses, is not allowed at any time of year unless prior permission has been given by the landowners. Snorkelling, SUP-ing or diving in waters around Vigur also requires prior permission.
Conservation: Thank you for working with us to protect the island and its wildlife. Please help us by:
maintaining the recommended distance of 80m from the rocks and reefs around the south and eastern shores of the island where the seals regularly haul out. This applies to yachts and kayaks as well as motorised boats. More guidance on operating around seals can be found on the website of the Icelandic Seal Centre.
kindly slowing down the speed of boats as much as possible when passing the buoy on approach to the floating jetty. Please avoid creating a wake that washes across the beach as this is where many groups of young seabirds like to sit and feed. We ask for the same consideration as you leave the jetty.
observing our request that you and your guests do not smoke, use drones or bring pets with you to the island. Thank you!
helping us reduce the waste that must be removed from the island, by taking any rubbish/trash away with you and in particular please avoiding bringing plastic bottles of water for guests (we instead provide free and unlimited water from Vigur’s own spring - which is delicious!).
We respectfully remind visitors that Vigur is both a fragile wildlife habitat and a private home. Many of the team you will meet on the island are family members or Vigur Island Foundation volunteers giving their time for free and for the enjoyment of sharing what they know of the island with others. Sadly, it is necessary to state that any abuse by visitors of the staff or wildlife on Vigur will result in an immediate end to the landing operation.
Your support in our efforts to conserve and protect Vigur is greatly appreciated. By bringing guests to the island you are helping us to spread awareness of the work of the Vigur Island Foundation for conservation and research and we are super grateful for that. We also very much enjoy the company.
We look forward to welcoming you to Vigur!
