Arrival directions: Head for the green buoy (approx. coordinates N 66 02.730 W 022 49.980) and pass to its landward side before making for the pier. The floating jetty is on the left-hand side of the pier as you approach. Please note we have had boats with a draft of 2.5m alongside the pier safely at low tide. Vigur staff will meet all arrivals at the pier to assist with mooring. If you are arriving with guests, please remind your passengers not to leave the pier until they have been greeted by Vigur staff and the tour begins - in particular please ask your guests not to venture down to the beach by the pier where the seals are often hauling out on rocks, as this causes the colony to disappear and cannot then be enjoyed by everyone.

Access: Vigur is an eider colony protected by Icelandic laws that prohibit coming ashore at certain times of year. Overnight mooring, anchorage or coming ashore anywhere around the coast of Vigur, apart from at the pier, is not allowed at any time of year unless prior permission has been given by the landowners. Snorkelling, SUP-ing or diving in waters around Vigur also requires prior permission.

Conservation: Thank you for working with us to protect the island and its wildlife. Please help us further limit the impact of tourism on Vigur’s birdlife and harbour seal population by:

• maintaining the recommended distance of 80m from the rocks and reefs around the south of the island where the seals regularly haul out (marked on map above). This applies to yachts and kayaks as well as motorised boats.

• during landing by expedition ships using their own boats, restricting the movement of empty boats back and forth to the island or any unnecessary journeys. (Please note: we do not offer the opportunity for zodiac cruising around the coast as this creates too much disturbance to the nesting colonies but we can provide suggestions for alternative locations nearby along the mainland coast.)

• slowing down the speed of boats as much as possible when passing the buoy on approach to the pier and when leaving. Please avoid creating a wake that washes across the beach.

• observing our request that you and your guests do not smoke, use drones or bring pets with you to the island.

• in order to reduce the plastic waste that must be removed from the island, please avoid bringing plastic bottles of water for guests (we instead provide free and unlimited water from Vigur’s own spring).

We respectfully remind visitors that Vigur is both a fragile wildlife habitat and a private home. Many of the team you will meet on the island are family members or volunteers giving their time for free and for the enjoyment of sharing what they know of the island with others. We ask that all guests remain with the island’s expert guides at all times and follow their recommendations closely. It is not possible for guests, expedition staff, or ship photographers to independently roam the island. Any deemed abuse by visitors of the staff or wildlife on Vigur will result in an immediate end to the landing operation. Repeat offenders will not be invited back.
